Is weight lifting at a young age bad for you?

Let us look at the facts.

1. It's unsafe for kids to do resistance training - False

There was widespread fear through the 1970s and 1980s around children participating in resistance training. This stemmed from data gathered by the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. This data was based on injuries that patients had stated were related to resistance exercise and equipment, therefore, it is incorrect to say injuries were caused by the exact activity or device. Now you can see why people believed it was bad for children to perform resistance training and that there was no real evidence for the statement that correlated the injuries to resistance training. In fact, studies have shown that resistance training has no greater risk than any other sport or recreational activities that children and adolescents regularly engage in.

2. Resistance training stunts growth and affects growth plates - False

This is a traditional area of concern for children engaging in resistance training. Again this stems from a few reports published in the 1970s and 1980s however most of these injuries were due to improper lifting techniques or lack of qualified adult supervision. There is no evidence to suggest that resistance training will negatively impact growth.

3. Increased risk of injury training at home - True

It was reported that young children are more likely to be injured from home exercise equipment because of unsafe behavior, equipment malfunction and lack of supervision. These findings underscore the importance of close supervision and safe training equipment for youths performing resistance training.

But is it effective?

Yes! There is a compelling body of scientific evidence indicating that children and adolescents can significantly increase their strength above and beyond growth and maturation.

As you can see above many studies performed in the 1970s and 1980s have now been proven wrong or the real results have been reported finally which is changing the way we look at many different sport science topics.
