Why you HAVE TO exercise to get smarter

If you are a leader in business, a student or anyone who wants to expand their knowledge and be more intelligent you have to exercise. New research shows that on top of being good for your health, exercise makes you smarter too.

Neuroscientists in Portland, Oregan made the discovery that a short burst of exercise increases connections in the region of the brain that is associated with learning and memory. Other research has also found exercise has both direct and indirect impacts upon your brain. Directly exercise reduces insulin resistance, reduces inflammation and stimulates the release of growth factors. These growth factors are chemicals that affect the health of brain cells, the growth of new blood vessels and the abundance and survival of new brain cells. Indirectly exercise improves mood and sleep whilst reducing stress and anxiety. Cognitive impairment is often a result of issues in these areas.

There is debate over whether or not adult brains form new neurons. The most recent research confirms that we can grow new brain cells throughout our lives (hooray!).

So what type of exercise should you do to stimulate your brain? Well, the answer isn't clear cut when it comes to scientific findings. I would be willing to bet on exercise that requires you to think about what you are doing. In other words, you have to learn. This way, not only are you improving your brain's health, you are reinforcing that skill of learning which is essential to gaining and retaining new knowledge.
